Championing the patient voice to advance safer health care

Patients for Patient Safety Canada is a patient led national organization committed to bring the perspective of patients and families to healthcare organizations and systems engaged in safety improvement.

Our members are experienced in initiating and supporting constructive dialogue with all decision-makers, presenting to different audiences, and sharing their personal stories and lessons learned in order to facilitate opportunities to influence, lead, and collaborate in the achievement of “safe health care for all”.

We see improvement projects that lack authentic patient input to be incomplete in important ways, and that the success of such projects hinges on a holistic and inclusive diversity of perspective and experience, from bedside staff providing care every day to the patients and families receiving that care. There is no greater stakeholder in the effort to improve the safety of care than patients and families.

Current strategic goals include:

  • Realizing full disclosure about all adverse events
  • Incorporating the patient experience into patient safety research
  • Involving patients and families in all care decisions affecting them
  • Being continual learners and educators about patient safety

These goals build on our natural alliances with the World Health Organization’s World Alliance for Patient Safety action areas, the global Patients for Patient Safety group and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute.
